I’ve been told that every quilt tells a story.
For my first quilting project (100 wishes quilt), I’m so blessed to be able to share many stories of well wishes, friendship, and love with our daughter.
This beautiful red and pink key fabric was sent to me by a treasured friend who’s known me since my goofy high school years. I met Kristen Gettys when we both served as lieutenant governors for Key Club (a high school service organization under the umbrella of Kiwanis) in Texas and Oklahoma. Even though we lived in different states, our friendship picked up without missing a beat at board meetings and conventions.
Wonderful Kristen (a youth Librarian in Tulsa) is a dedicated friend who encouraged me with lovely letters and tokens of friendship throughout a tumultuous first year in college. I never forgot her steadfast friendship and kindness, even when I was the one to drop the correspondance ball with the overwhelming circumstances of “life as a college freshman.”
Years later, we connected again on Facebook. Thanks goodness for Facebook.
It was sweet Kristen who sent the darling key-themed fabric that tells the story of the start of our friendship.
She enclosed a sweet card with the message,
I hope your little girl finds her own way to give back to her community and find joy in that. Knowing her Mama, I know that Calvin and his sister will be givers.”
Also thinking of Calvin, she enclosed holographic Snoopy stickers. I wonder if Kristen even knows that it is a well-worn stuffed Snoopy that Calvin cuddles each night.
I consider myself truly blessed to have found a friend in Kristen. Seriously…those of you who have the honor to call her “friend”–mighty lucky people. Everyone should have a friend as kind, thoughtful, considerate, and loyal as Kristen.
I can’t wait to tell our daughter about the lovely woman who contributed her quilt square and wish.
